Beautiful Disaster and Walking Disaster

It's been a long time since I fell in love with a book character.  Yes, i love Travis Maddox!  hahaha! Teenager lang ang peg!  ;)

Anyway, a Beautiful Disaster is one heck of a love story.  Nakakakilig promise!!! This is the one book that I literally cannot put down.  Muntik na nga kaming mag-away ng asawa ko dahil for one day eh nakalimutan kong may asawa at anak ako.  As in I was really glued to the book.  I really loved it! Definitely one of my favorite books ever!!!  So when I learned that there was a part two second book written from the perspective of the male lead, Travis, i was ecstatic!  I called Fully Booked and National Bookstore right away but sadly, all copies were already sold out.  Being the impatient person that I am, I asked my husband to buy me an ebook version.  For some reason or maybe I'm just old fashioned, i prefer reading real books compared to ebooks.  Iba e, kahit na mas mura ang ebook!  Anyway, ang nakakainis after a few days, Fully Booked called me to tell me that a new batch of Walking Disaster was delivered to them.  Wala na, huli na ang lahat! Hmp!

So, what's the story.  Here's a summary:

The new Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn’t drink or swear, and she has the appropriate percentage of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance between her and the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University's Walking One-Night Stand.

Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby needs—and wants—to avoid. He spends his nights winning money in a floating fight ring, and his days as the ultimate college campus charmer. Intrigued by Abby’s resistance to his appeal, Travis tricks her into his daily life with a simple bet. If he loses, he must remain abstinent for a month. If Abby loses, she must live in Travis’s apartment for the same amount of time. Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match.

The way it was written by Jamie McGuire, nakakakilig talaga.  Basta for me a must read sya!  Rather than tell you in details why i love the two books, i'll just share my favorite quotes from the books.

> “One of these days you're going to fall in love, son. Don't settle for just anyone. Choose the girl that doesn't come easy; the one you have to fight for, and then never stop fighting. Never”

> “There's a girl, Dad."
He smiled a bit. "A girl."
"She kinda hates me, and I kinda..."
"Love her?"
"I don't know. I don't think so. I mean...how do you know?"
His smile grew wider. "When you're talking about her with your old dad because you don't know what else to do.”

> Abby touched her palm to my cheek.  "You know what, Mr. Maddox?"
"What, baby?"
Her expression turned serious.
"In another life, i could love you."
I watched her for a moment, staring into her glassed over eyes.  She was drunk, but just for a moment it didn't seem wrong to pretend that she meant it.
"I might love you in this one."

> "I like her," I said through my teeth.
Shepley held his hand to his ear. "What? I couldn't quite hear you."
"You're an asshole! Did you hear that?"
Shepley crossed his arms. "Say it."
"I like her, okay?"
"Not good enough."
"I have feelings for her. I care about her. A lot. I can't stand it when she's not around. Happy?”

> "You, Mad Dog, are exactly what I came here to protect her from. But you know what? We're all broken some way or another. Even with your epic fuckup, you just might be exactly what she needs. You get one more chance”

> “A toast” I yelled, climbing onto a chair. On my way to the top, I stole someone’s beer and held it out in front of me. “To douche bags!” I said gesturing to Brad. “And to girls that break your heart.” I bowed to Abby. My throat tightened. “And to the absolute fucking horror of losing your best friend because you were stupid enough to fall in love with her. ”

A bonus for me was that the supporting characters are lovable too.  I kinda loved America, Shepley and Travis' family as well.  So, in the end, you can't help but root for a happy ending. =)

I've Got Your Number

I have always loved Sophie Kinsella!  Her books are funny, a breeze to read and heart-warming.  I personally loved the original/first Shopaholic book and Can You Keep a Secret?.  The other books though, were just okay for me.  So, when I got a copy of her latest novel, I've Got Your Number, I was secretly hoping that it would be good, really funny and would make me feel giddy again.  I wasn't disappointed.  It was hilarious!  I totally loved it.  Now, it ranks as my favorite Sophie Kinsella book.  =)

Synopsis:

I've lost it. The only thing in the world I wasn't supposed to lose. My engagement ring. It's been in Magnus's family for three generations. And now, the very same day his parents are coming, I've lost it. The very same day. Do not hyperventilate Poppy. Stay positive!!

Poppy Wyatt has never felt luckier. She is about to marry the ideal man, Magnus Tavish, but in one afternoon her 'happy ever after' begins to fall apart. Not only has she lost her engagement ring but in the panic that followed, she has now lost her phone. As she paces shakily round the hotel foyer she spots an abandoned phone in a bin. Finders keepers! Now she can leave a number for the hotel to contact her when they find her ring. Perfect!

Well, perfect except the phone's owner, businessman Sam Roxton doesn't agree. He wants his phone back and doesn't appreciate Poppy reading all his messages and wading into his personal life.

What ensues is a hilarious and unpredictable turn of events as Poppy and Sam increasingly upend each other's lives through emails and text messages. As Poppy juggles wedding preparations, mysterious phone calls and hiding her left hand from Magnus and his parents... she soon realises that she is in for the biggest surprise of her life.

So if you guys want a light, easy and funny read, buy this book.  You wouldn't be disappointed. =)

The Hunger Games Challenge

Disclaimer:  This is actually supposed to be a 30-day challenge, but given my impatient nature I decided to do it in one day.  Haha! =p

I've already written in this blog how big a fan I am of The Hunger Games trilogy.  So, while on maternity leave, I've decided to reread the books since I know that the movie is to be released on 2012.  Oohh... I can't wait...  So, to alleviate my thirst for the movie, I decided to answer this 30-day challenge I found on the web.

Day 1: Your favorite character:  Hmm... I love Gale... But I also like Peeta... So you see, just like Katniss, I'm also torn between the two.  But I must admit, i'm leaning towards Gale more.  Just between us, I have a thing for bestfriend-turned-lovers love story.  It ranks second to the enemy-turned-lovers story.  How cliche can I get?! Hahaha
Day 2: Your least favorite character:  Pres. Coin! Yes, I hate her more than Pres. Snow.
Day 3: A character you hate that everyone loves:  Tough one...  Hate is such a big word... But Prim is I think my least favorite... I only liked her in Mockingjay...
Day 4: A character you love that everyone hates: Maybe Johanna because she was really a bitch most of the time.  Hahaha!
Day 5: Your favorite fight/battle scene:  When the Careers found Katniss on top of a tree.  I just like their conversation exchanges.
Day 6: A scene that made you laugh:  When Katniss and Finnick woke Peeta up with burn ointment on their faces.  It made me think of friends playing pranks on each other. =)
Day 7: A scene that made you cry:  Since I'm a big crybaby, it's a given that I've cried lots of times because of these books.  First, was when Katniss volunteered to take Prim's place in the reaping and told their mother to take care of Prim.  Then, when Rue died... When Cinna died... During Katniss' speech in District 11... When Peeta didn't recognize /  strangled Katniss... Last conversation between Katniss and Gale...
Day 8: The character you are most like:  Katniss... In the sense that I'm willing to do anything for my family.
Day 9: Your favorite quote: "Why do you think I'm going, brainless?" - Johanna to Katniss, when Johanna told Katniss to kill Pres. Snow.  Wala lang, i just like the cariƱo brutal friendship of Johanna and Katniss.
Day 10: Peeta or Gale: Gale!  But Peeta is not a bad choice either.  But yeah, Gale for me.
Day 11: Something you hate about the series: That it ended so soon. Haha! I want more!!!
Day 12: A character you wish hadn’t died: Definitely, Finnick!!! He should have been given a happy ending! I just don't get why he had to die...
Day 13: A character you wish had died:  This might seem contradicting, but Gale should have died in the end.  At least that way, I can accept why Katniss chose Peeta.  And besides, the ending made it seem that Gale is as good as dead anyway for Katniss.

Day 14: Your favorite tribute (aside from Peeta/Katniss): Finnick, Johanna and Thresh (Yes, even with brief exposure, i like Thresh.)
Day 15: Your least favorite tribute (aside from Peeta/Katniss): Hmm.. Maybe Clove.  Just because of the way she wanted to kill Katniss.  So inhumane...
Day 16: A question you wish had been answered in the book: Being one of the main casts, I don't get why there wasn't any back story on Peeta's family.
Day 17: The worst death: Finnick!  I can't get over why he had to die!
Day 18: A song that reminds you of the series: I'm not good with songs...

Day 19: Your favorite pairing: Gale and Katniss of course... Finnick and Annie also.

Day 20: Your least favorite pairing:  I want to say Peeta and Katniss, but I like them as well... So, no answer to this question.

Day 21: A pairing you don’t get:  Does Madge really like Gale???
Day 22: Your favorite book of the three: Definitely, Hunger Games!

Day 23: Your favorite secondary character: Cinna, Finnick and Boggs

Day 24: Your least favorite secondary character:  Katniss' mother.  It seems that she doesn't care much for Katniss.  As a newbie mom, I just don't get it!
Day 25: Your dream cast: They've already cast the movie, so i just hope that they give justice to the book.
Day 26: Your favorite scene in The Hunger Games:  When Peeta told Claudius Templesmith during his interview that he cannot win and get his dream girl at the same time because they went to the hunger games together.  I just find it so sweet!
Day 27: Your favorite scene in Catching Fire:  When Katniss delivered her speech in District 11.  It was so touching!
Day 28: Your favorite scene in Mockingjay: When Peeta was allowed to eat in the dining area for the first time.  You can really sense the tension among him, Katniss and Gale.

Day 29: Your favorite thing about the entire series: That it has a different and unique plot.  I've never read something like that.
Day 30: A book/series that you would rec to fellow fans:  Aside from Harry Potter and Twilight, I also like the Mortal Instrument series.

So friends, if you haven't read this series yet, now is the time to start.  =)

The Chocolate Lovers' Club

I went to National Bookstore Galleria yesterday with no intention of buying anything at all.  Don't get me wrong because I'm such a book lover.  I don't mind being in a bookstore for hours.  It's just that hubby and I went there the other day and wala naman akong nagustuhan.  I just went there (again) to pass time.  And then I saw it... A big red sign that says "less than P100".  So the cheapskate that I am, trooped to that area and browsed and browsed and browsed.  Mind you, the books are all hardbound and really priced under P100.

And this is what I bought for P99.00:

I am a certified self-confessed chocoholic and finding this book really got me excited.  I mean, I'm both a fan of chick lit and chocolates so this book is just perfect (i hope!).  I read the first chapter and so far, i'm liking it.  The only downside is that i want chocolates more NOW, as in this instant!  But I already gained a lot of lbs throughout my pregnancy and I don't want to gain unnecessary weight should my baby become big and have a hard time fitting through my birth canal.  Sigh.  Di bale, more or less two more weeks, and Kit promised that I can eat all the chocolates that I want.  Sooo looking forward to that!  =)

(I have side kwento:  I made Kit promise me that once I give birth, I want chocolates, ice-cold coke, cake and ice cream inside the ref of our hospital room.  Talk about sugar overload!  Hahaha!  But I can settle for just chocolates and coke.  =p)

Books, books, books

I have always loved reading.  Maybe it's the frustrated actress (Truth to be told, I once dreamt of becoming a theater actress when I was young.  I so love plays!) in me, but I can easily put myself in the protagonist's shoes.  So immersed am I when i'm reading that I always end up crying, laughing, kilig, scared or whatever emotion it is that you're supposed to feel.  And I don't like putting down books when I'm not done with it.  Usually, i finish a book within hours of starting it.  I just don't like the idea of cutting down momentum.

I remember when Kit and I were preparing for our wedding, I asked for a bookshelf in our condo unit.  But due to limited space and with the baby coming, I decided to just leave all my books at my parent's house and make do with our existing cabinet for my new acquisitions.  After all, i'd rather have a play area and storage for baby's things than a display case for my books.  But maybe in the near future, we can have both.  :-)

Anyway, here's a list of books I'm dying to get my hands on:  (Got the pictures by the way at amazon.)

These books are also called the Millenium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson.  With the catchy titles, good reviews and movie to boot, I can't wait to start reading this crime-fiction series.

I loved Albom's Tuesdays with Morrie, so I'm kinda sure I will also love this one.

I just finished Lore's I am Number Four, and I liked it!  I've always been a fan of book series so I can't wait for Lore to finish and release the Lorien Legacies.  This book by the way, will be released this August so it's still a long wait.

When I saw this at the bookstore, I really got intrigued with the synopsis.  It is from the perspective of Jack, a 5-year old boy who lives with his mother at an 11x11 ft room he considers his world.  It is definitely thought-provoking and very intriguing.  I am just afraid that I might get bothered with the story, especially now that I'm pregnant.  Oh well, I will read this after I give birth.

Another series.  This actually was suggested by my college friend, Jen.  Kit and I liked the movie so I decided maybe I'll like the books also.  At least, it's something light and fun and can bring back the kid in me.  Plus, this can be Baby's first book series.  :-)

So, what I am reading now?  I actually just finished The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger and I am Number Four by Pittacus Lore and I'm about to start with P.S. I Love You by Cecilia Ahern.  I loved the movie with Gerard Butler and Hillary Swank, so I figured I might the love the book more.   After all, I have yet to find a movie that I loved more than the book version.

OT: The Hunger Games

I know this has nothing to do with wedding preps, but I just wanna share it. =)

I may sound really nerdy, but I love books!  I love reading! Mainly because books allow me to put myself in situations I would never have the guts to undergo in real life. Just like my recent read, The Hunger Games Trilogy.

The books are great!!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading them! Such a different storyline. Imagine this: 2 teenager representatives ("tributes" as they call it in the books) from the 12 districts of the country Panem, one arena, the Hunger Games... meaning the 24 tributes fighting to death until only one remains.  How different is that?! If that storyline is not enough for you, Suzanne Collins added a love story/triangle that makes it more appealing to her young readers (ahem!).  I for one, was confused as to who I want Katniss to end up with, her bestfriend Gale or her co-tribute Peeta. Haha!

Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, tributes of District 12.
